When you think about managing Hashimoto’s or other thyroid conditions, hydration probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. However, proper hydration is crucial—and electrolytes play a starring role in making it happen.
The Electrolyte-Thyroid Connection
If you’re living with a thyroid condition or adrenal imbalance, your body may be more prone to dehydration—even if you're drinking plenty of water. Electrolyte imbalances can sneak in and make symptoms worse, often without us even realising the cause.
I’ve been there. During my own Hashimoto’s journey, I experienced dizzy spells, headaches, and constant fatigue. I eventually made the connection between these symptoms and my electrolyte levels—and I noticed how dramatically things improved when I addressed this imbalance.
What Are the Symptoms of Electrolyte Imbalance?
Many of the symptoms people commonly associate with thyroid disease may actually stem from low electrolytes, including:
Fatigue and brain fog
Low blood pressure or feeling faint when standing
Muscle cramps and aches
Frequent urination and increased thirst
Anxiety or mild depression
“Wired but tired” feeling
Constipation or diarrhoea
Dry skin and lips
Headaches
Low blood sugar
Irregular or fast heartbeat
